This EVAN workshop will represent an interactive tutorial program featuring keynote components of NESPOS and VisiCore. Participants will be trained in e.g. best practices for data entry, how to share data with colleagues, the usage of the advanced search for efficient content retrieval as well as the exploration and analysis of 3D data stored in NESPOS.

NESPOS - The 'Neanderthal Studies Professional Online Service' is a continuously growing archive with whom archaeologists and paleoanthropologists can exchange their research results and share their ideas by a professional Wiki-based collaboration platform. The core data of the system will provide detailed information of the most important sites, their analytical results, archaeological finds, relevant publications and a variety of 3D scans of Neanderthal fossils and artefacts. NESPOS will significantly reduce the handling expenses and increase the accessibility of data for archaeological research. Additionally by the EVAN project an archive for modern reference data will be created within NESPOS for internal use.

VisiCore Suite – This is the integrated 3D visualisation engine of NESPOS. The VisiCore Suite provides a unique all-embracing archaeological visualisation and annotation tool set that covers the scientific workflow from the topographics of an excavation campaign to the exploration and documentation of single finds and artefacts. The two main components are:

ArteCore - the artefact exploration and collaboration rendering engine provides a tool set of real-time 2D and 3D visualisation routines for the examination of the remains' virtual high resolution-representations. ArteCore was developed supervised by palaeoanthropolgist and matches exactly their demands.

GeoCore - the site mapping and rendering engine provides a map based geo information system for presenting, exploring, and editing of archaeological excavation data in real-time 3D perspective.

The international renowned Neanderthal Museum with its multimedia exhibition will be presented by a guided tour. The innovative sculpture park and site installation invite the participants to relax between the intensive training units. Additionally, social events and networking opportunities will be coordinated within Düsseldorf and vincinities.
